The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim has won the Kumawu by-election in the Ashanti region.
Counting of ballots in all 75 polling centres puts Anim in the lead.
Unconfirmed results sighted by mypublisher24.com shows the NPP candidate garnering more votes than his competitors.
Anim polled 15, 260 of valid votes cast representing 70.91% with the National Democratic Congress’ candidate, Kwasi Amankwaa and the two independent candidates trailing.
Amankwaa secured 3,719 being 17. 28% while Kwaku Duah– (one) polled 2,478 representing 11.52%.
Kwaku Duah –(two) managed a paltry 62 votes representing 0.29%
The polls so far have been largely peaceful, watched by a heavy police presence, with the NPP and NDC deploying high-level officials as polling officials.
Kumawu has 34,800 registered voters, however poll watchers say turnout in by-elections are generally below par.
The NDC had vowed to wrest the seat, made vacant following the death of the NPP’s Philip Basoah, from the NPP which has always won it since 2000.
Already supporters of the NPP and its candidate are on the streets in wild jubilation.
President Akufo-Addo , Vice President Bawumia and other party big boys stormed Kumawo on Sunday to whip up support for Anim.
President Akufo-Addo had declared that Tuesday’s by-elections is pivotal for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) victory in the 2024 elections.
He expressed confidence in the NPP’s chances and emphasized the significance of the by-election in shaping the party’s trajectory going into the 2024 general elections.
“Kumawu holds the key to our success in the upcoming elections. Let us seize this opportunity, mobilize our supporters, and pave the way for a resounding victory in 2024,” the President said.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the strategic significance of the Kumawu constituency serves as a critical cornerstone for the NPP’s triumph in the upcoming general elections stating that the support and momentum garnered in Kumawu will reverberate nationwide, forging the path to NPP’s victory in 2024
He urged the people of Kumawu to be vigilant and actively participate in the democratic process.

“We have lifted all restrictions on COVID for everything to bounce back and so things are getting better,” he said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to revitalizing the economy and fostering growth.
Furthermore, the President celebrated the recent approval received from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which he hailed as “great news” attributing the fast approval of the IMF loan to the tireless efforts and compelling case presented by his government.
The President maintained that the current NPP administration has already accomplished a substantial amount of work in line with its campaign promises and hence, it is only right that Ghanaians give the NPP the mandate in 2024 to continue with its works.
