Fresh turmoil has erupted within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as reports that General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, allegedly held a secret meeting with 12 Regional Chairmen in Accra in a bid to oust the party’s First National Vice Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey.
According to the reports, the meeting—reportedly held at midnight on Sunday, June 15—was aimed at persuading the chairmen to pass a vote of no confidence in Chairman Buttey, thereby preventing him from presiding over a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for today Tuesday June 17.
The Inquirer reports that while four of the chairmen agreed to the plan, eight others rejected it. Of the four who agreed, two chairmen were from coastal regions, while the other two represented middle belt regions—one of whom is said to have recently received substantial support from Kodua during a period of legal trouble.
The plot reportedly hinges on accusing Chairman Buttey of making disparaging comments about the party’s leadership, including an alleged radio statement in which he said all current executives had failed and should resign.
Party insiders claim Kodua, who has been closely aligned with outgoing National Chairman Stephen Ntim, is desperate to block Buttey from assuming the acting chairmanship. They say Kodua fears Buttey may not support his personal agenda or allow manipulation of party structures.
Kodua is further accused of initially trying to conceal Chairman Ntim’s health condition from party leaders. That attempt was thwarted when Ntim’s family issued a public statement urging the party not to exploit his health issues for political gain. Following that, Kodua reportedly encouraged members of the UK branch to petition for Buttey’s suspension.
The sources allege that Kodua, facing declining support due to what is seen as weak leadership, is working to influence the party’s internal electoral processes by modifying the voter album and changing the database management software.
Additionally, there are claims that he has raised significant funds in the name of the party but has consistently refused to provide accountability, often claiming he had the National Chairman’s approval.
