President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially launched the National Service Authority (NSA), established under the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119).
This initiative aims to transform the National Service Scheme into a full-fledged authority, and focuses on youth empowerment and national cohesion, playing a pivotal role in Ghana’s development.
President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of nurturing responsible citizens with a strong sense of patriotism.
“The dreams I have long envisioned for our youth and the future of our country are finally coming to fruition with the establishment of the National Service Authority,” he stated.
A key point of the President’s address was the financial benefits of the new initiative. He revealed that the scheme saves the nation over GH¢3 billion annually in personnel costs, thanks to the significant difference between the stipends and the salaries of National Service Personnel and regular public servants respectively.
“This transformation is not just about mobilizing graduates; it’s about creating a cost-effective system that benefits our nation,” he affirmed.
With more than 150,000 graduates deployed yearly, the NSA is expected to address developmental gaps across education, health, and infrastructure.
The President noted, “The savings from this initiative allow us to invest more in essential services and infrastructure for our communities.”
Reflecting on the history of the National Service Scheme, President Akufo-Addo mentioned its roots in Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Builders Brigade and its growth through various governments.
He expressed confidence that the new authority would continue to enhance the contributions of National Service Personnel while equipping them with employability skills that would make them valuable in the job market.
To facilitate a smooth transition from education to employment for service personnel, the President announced that the NSA would operate under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
This alignment aims to improve the integration of graduates into the workforce, a move the President believes will have positive outcomes for the country.
President Akufo-Addo reiterated his dedication to supporting the NSA’s mission. “I will remain a patron of this initiative, ensuring that we provide the necessary resources and guidance for its success,” he stated.
