The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has strongly condemned the vicious attack on Akosua Otchere, a journalist with Citi FM/TV, during the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Parliamentary Aspirants Vetting in the Odododiodoo constituency.
The incident, which occurred on Friday October 13, has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of journalists in Ghana.
PRINPAG expressed deep concern about the incident, emphasizing the importance of press freedom and journalists’ ability to carry out their duties without fear of reprisal.
The association highlighted the critical role journalists play in society and called for immediate action to ensure their safety and protection.
A statement issued by PRINPAG, stated, “The attack on Akosua Otchere is a clear violation of her rights and an assault on press freedom.”
“PRINPAG stands in solidarity with her and Citi FM/TV, urging the NDC to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. We call on all political parties to prioritize the safety of journalists, as they are indispensable to our democracy.”
The Association also urged politicians to restrain their supporters and members from resorting to violence, especially against the media.
Andrew Edwin Arthur, President of PRINPAG, stressed the need for authorities to swiftly investigate the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable.
He stated, “No democracy can function effectively without a free and safe media. We stand united in advocating for the rights and safety of journalists, and we will continue to uphold the principles of press freedom in Ghana.”
The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists’ rights and called on the entire media fraternity to remain resilient in the face of such attacks, continuing to fulfill their professional responsibilities.
