Security Analyst, Adam Bonaa, has called for reshuffling in the Ghana Police Service as part of strategies to stem the tide of violent crime engulfing the country.
According to him, once criminals feel they are ahead of crime fighting because they are familiar with officers, they tend to learn their modus operandi and models of dealing with crime.
He stated that the criminals also study the police and learn how officers go about in the attempt to arrest them, collecting data on them and the various strategies that the police have perfected.
Contributing to a discussion on the spate of violent armed robberies in the country on the Key Points on TV3, Saturday June 19, he stated that the Police Service is aware of the situation and the needed course of action.
He said, “I think that the police know what to do. Their own data and statistics, and the documents they have in their custody tell them in such situations, what they must do.”
“In the past what have been done in fighting this type of surge in violent crimes is to quickly relook at the positions, I mean reshuffle.”
“If you know the psyche or the mentality of the criminals, once they feel they are ahead of you because they know who you are because they’ve been dealing with you, they tend to learn your own models.”
He stated that back in 2018 when similar violent crimes reared their ugly heads, then Inspector-General of Police, David Asante Apeatu, immediately restructured the Ghana Police and added additional units to strengthen the already existing strategy, which compelled criminals to almost immediately stop their activities.
According to Adam Bona, the crimes stopped immediately because the criminals stepped back to take stock of the situation and relooked at the new officers who have been moved from one position to the other.
He stressed these new strategies were very effective to halt violent crimes for the short term.
He indicated that what is working against crime fighting currently is the inability to collect data and intelligence on criminals.
He argued that National Security, whose core mandate has to do with coordinating, collecting and analyzing intelligence is almost isolated and almost on its own.
He lamented that the institution has been so bastardized and quite difficult to divorce from politics.
He stressed that though there are very intelligent officers within the setup, they cannot effectively do their work because those who came in through the political backdoor are the ones who seem to be doing the work.
