Senior High Schools across the country participated in a national STEM competition organized by the Youth Employment Authority (YEA), with Accra High School emerging as a top contender.
The school showcased an innovative ‘Integrated Waste Management System’, designed by students, which addresses critical issues of waste disposal and sustainability. This marks a significant achievement for Ghana’s future innovators.
The project developed by Accra High School combines biogas production with water filtration, turning waste into valuable resources:
– Anaerobic digestion: Food waste and animal dung are broken down to produce methane and carbon dioxide.
– Biogas utilization: Methane is harnessed as a fuel source for cooking.
– Water filtration: Contaminated water is filtered for farming and treated further to make it safe for drinking.
Accra High students also demonstrated their robotics prototypes, showcasing their understanding of the Engineering Design process and further reinforcing their mastery of STEM principles.
Kofi Baah Agyepong, CEO of the Youth Employment Authority (YEA), commended the students for their ingenuity and encouraged them to apply their creativity to solve real-world problems.
“You have a responsibility not just to yourselves but to the generations that follow,” he stated.
This competition underlines Ghana’s commitment to advancing STEM education as a means of addressing key challenges like waste management and sustainability.
The success of Accra High School and other participating institutions demonstrates the capacity of Ghana’s youth to be agents of change and drivers of future economic growth.
