Teachers and students of Anloga Senior High Secondary School (Anseco) and residents of Atsugbor Electoral Area in the Anloga District of the Volta Region are in a state of shock and panic after lightning claimed the life of a teacher in the area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at about 1745 hours during a heavy downpour characterised by thunderstorm.

Mr. James Fiati, the Assembly Member of the area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the incident has left many residents traumatised as the area had not experienced a such tragic incident for a very long time.

“I received calls from some of my residents on Wednesday evening about a man who was in raincoat and was lying motionless in the middle of the road, while it was still raining with no sign of anybody present with him, and it was so terrible a situation,” Mr. Fiati said.

Mr. Fiati said it was believed that the deceased teacher was heading home after school when the unfortunate incident occurred.

He cautioned residents to be mindful in taking necessary precautions during rainfall to ensure their safety.

He said that other information gathered indicated that the deceased has been identified as Mr. William Amoako, who is also Physics teacher in the Science Department of the Anloga Senior High Secondary school.

“Many are suspicious that the devastating situation was a thunder strike, but we have reported the incident to Anloga Police, who conveyed the deceased body to the morgue of the Keta Municipal Hospital for further examination and autopsy.”

Mr. Fiati said that the Police and members of the school authority had since visited the incident scene and preliminary examination on the body of the deceased revealed bruises on the head and torn clothing, which was also suspicious of lightning.

Other information GNA gathered, also revealed that the deceased, who was in his early 30, was from Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region and the case has been reported to the Anloga Police, who have begun investigations into the incident.

The authorities of the Anloga Senior High Secondary School are also yet to comment on the incident, while the public have been encouraged to remain calm and assist Police in their investigations into the incident as well as exercise caution during the rainy season, which is characterised by frequent thunderstorms.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the communities with many residents struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of life while others are mourning, with students and teachers paying tribute to their fallen colleague.
