The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced that vehicular traffic on several key routes in Accra will be interrupted from Tuesday, June 13, to October 31, 2023.
The interruption, according to the ministry, is necessary to facilitate the construction of a flyover over the Accra–Tema Motorway, a significant infrastructure project undertaken by Messrs China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited.
The flyover, estimated to cost $200 million, is expected to be one of the largest in the sub-region and is scheduled for completion by December 2023.
In a statement, the Ministry informed the general public and all road users that traffic flow disruptions would occur at the Flowerpot Roundabout bound traffic due to intense construction activities at the southern approach of the flyover over the Motorway project.
The affected routes include Spintex Road (East and West Bound), Burma Camp Road from Giffard Road, and Martey Tsuru Road (East and West Bound).
To ensure the smooth movement of traffic through the construction area, motorists have been advised to adhere to traffic management and diversion signs placed at designated points or consider using alternate routes.
These measures aim to minimize inconveniences and maintain an efficient flow of traffic during the construction period.
The construction project encompasses the construction of one mainline bridge spanning 802 meters, two ramp bridges spanning 220 meters, four auxiliary roads covering 2.5 kilometers, and ancillary works.
The scope of work includes the implementation of a dual carriageway for the entire flyover with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a ramp from the northbound (Shiashie) onto the flyover towards the southbound (Airport Hills), a ramp from the flyover onto the motorway towards Tema, a slip from the motorway to the Boundary Road roundabout, an additional exit into Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange, as well as the installation of drains, culverts, streetlights, and road line markings.
The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Afriexim Bank, is funding this crucial infrastructure project.
The construction of the flyover aims to enhance transportation efficiency, alleviate traffic congestion, and contribute to the overall development of Accra’s road network.
