Residents of Ho, the Volta regional capital on Sunday poured onto the streets upon the news of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s election defeat.

Dr. Bawumia, Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPPP) in Saturday’s general elections, conceded defeat Sunday morning in a public announcement, congratulating Former President John Dramani Mahama who secured reelection with more than 1.5 million votes.

And just after Dr Bawumia, the NPP Presidential Candidate had conceded defeat, trumpets blared as supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in white branded tee-shirts, crossed with party colours of red, green and black, flooded the streets.

Several jubilant groups made processions, with deafening sounds of trumpets reverberating across the street.

Traffic was heavily disrupted particularly around the Ho Central Market, as NDC party paraphernalia waved in the air.

The jubilant crowds accompanied Mr. Edem Kofi Kpotosu, the Ho Central Constituency NDC parliamentary candidate to the Regional Collation Centre where he was declared winner of the parliamentary elections.

Mr. Kportosu polled 62,522 of the 70,062 votes cast, while his closest contender, Mr. Divine Bosson, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ho who contested on the ticket of the NPP, got 5,709 votes.

He was declared Member of Parliament elect to deafening cheers from the crowd.

The MP-elect promised to “work hard” for the benefit of all.

The Volta Region is an election stronghold of the NDC, and the Party won all 18 parliamentary seats in the 2024 general elections.
