The Transition Committee, responsible for facilitating the seamless handover between the outgoing and incoming governments, has announced key decisions following its second meeting at the Accra International Conference Center.
The committee has constituted six new sub-committees to address critical sectors during the transitional period. These sub-committees are: Finance and Economy; Energy and Natural Resources; Legal and Governance; Infrastructure; Interior/Public Safety (Security); and Social Sector Resources.
Membership for each sub-committee will include three nominees from both the outgoing and incoming governments, alongside senior public officials such as the Head of Civil Service and Cabinet Secretary, who will join as needed.
Spokesperson for the Transition Committee, Fatimatu Abubakar, emphasized the urgency of their work. “The Co-Chairs have directed that all sub-committees begin work immediately upon receiving the relevant handing over notes. Initial reports are expected within one week,” she stated.
Outgoing sector ministers and technical staff will be invited to provide context and clarity during discussions on sector-specific notes. This collaborative approach aims to ensure a smooth exchange of information and continuity of governance.
Regarding ongoing recruitment and payments, the committee clarified that these processes have received statutory approvals and are not deemed illegal. “The Government’s term expires at midnight on January 6, 2025. All recruitment and payment activities conducted under this administration are in line with the law. However, any allegations of illegality will be addressed on a case-by-case basis by the Transition Committee,” Abubakar explained.
She also debunked rumors suggesting that all ongoing recruitment and payments must be referred to the Transition Committee. “Such claims do not reflect the records of our meeting. The public is advised to disregard any misleading statements to this effect,” she added.
Fati Abubakar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.
“We are fully dedicated to handing over power to the incoming government on January 7, 2025, with the necessary structures and documentation in place,” she assured.
This meeting marks another significant step in the transition process, aimed at fostering stability and continuity as Ghana prepares for a new administration.
