The United States has extended warm congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang following their victory in the 2024 Presidential elections.
In a press statement issued by U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. praised Ghana for conducting a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
“Ghana’s elections are a testament to the country’s vibrant democracy and commitment to democratic principles. We commend the Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society, and security forces for their roles in ensuring a credible process,” Blinken stated.
The statement also recognized the historical significance of Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s election as Ghana’s first female Vice President.
“This is a momentous achievement for Ghana and a step forward for gender representation in governance,” Blinken added.
The U.S. commended outgoing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for graciously accepting the election results, emphasizing the importance of unity in the democratic process.
“Vice President Bawumia’s acceptance demonstrates true statesmanship and a commitment to the democratic values that underpin Ghana’s political landscape,” the statement read.
While celebrating Ghana’s democratic milestone, the U.S. expressed concern over reports of isolated incidents of violence that led to at least four confirmed deaths.
The statement extended condolences to the families of those killed and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
The United States reaffirmed its strong partnership with Ghana and expressed optimism about continued collaboration with the incoming administration.
