Ahead of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024, the United States Department of State has introduced a new visa restriction policy targeting individuals involved in undermining democratic processes.

This policy, announced on Monday, October 28, will restrict U.S. visas for anyone responsible for actions that disrupt Ghana’s democratic integrity.

The policy, under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, targets specific individuals and is not directed toward the general Ghanaian populace or government.

The U.S. statement highlighted Ghana’s democratic achievements, noting its three decades of peaceful power transitions.

By imposing these visa restrictions, the U.S. aims to reinforce its support for Ghanaians’ aspirations for a fair, peaceful, and transparent electoral process.

This policy underscores Washington’s commitment to advancing democratic values worldwide and preventing any actions aimed at manipulation or violence in Ghana’s electoral process.

The visa restriction policy covers actions intended to manipulate the electoral process, use violence, intimidate voters or political representatives, prevent freedoms of association or assembly, or improperly influence the election’s outcome.

Additionally, certain family members of such individuals may also face visa restrictions. The U.S. stands firm in its commitment to uphold democratic integrity, with a clear warning that visa restrictions may be enforced on individuals found undermining Ghanaian democracy leading up to, during, or following the 2024 elections.
