Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has inaugurated the governing board for the Postal and Courier Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) today, 4th October 2021.
The board is made up of Mr. Paul Aborah-Boateng as the board chair with Mad. Hamdaratu Zakaria; Mr. Clifford Bansah; Hon. Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah; Prof. Mrs Olivia Anku-Tsede; Mad. Alice Quarshie and Mrs Veronica Rita Ama Sackey as members.
The Minister in a short remark indicated that in 2003, the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Act 649 was enacted and has since expanded the sector by providing opportunities to the private sector to grow their businesses through technological advancements.
“The key function of PCSRC is to promote and encourage the growth of postal and courier services for the social and economic development of the country” she noted.
According to the Minister, since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the postal and delivery network has proved to be a very necessary avenue for connecting citizens and businesses with the services they need, acting as facilitators of e-commerce during emergencies like the covid-19 pandemic lockdown where citizens were restricted in going out.
“Evidently, postal and courier services played a major role during that period as they ensured goods bought online were delivered in a safe way as much as possible which meant citizens could sit in the comfort of their homes and receive their parcels without having to physically interact with a lot of people hence, reducing the spread of the virus. This also contributed to 73 new operators joining the delivery network in 2020 as against 33 in 2019’ the Minister added.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful challenged the board to tackle some of the issues the Commission and the industry are currently facing and will be facing in the future.
She advised the Commission to invest in the needed technological infrastructure which will help them manage the incoming models of delivery networks and enablers in the country.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful asked the members to look at the various operational and reform policies such as digitalization of the Commissions operations, review of Act 649 among others which will help strengthen the operations of the commission.
Speaking on behalf of the board, the Chairperson, Mr. Paul Aborah-Boateng pledged the members readiness to take the Postal Courier and Regulatory Commission to higher heights.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo for their appointment.
