The Volta Caucus in Parliament has hinted of a decision to solicit funds to complete the E-Block at Agblekpui in Aflao, which was at the centre of a scathing remark by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
MP for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie disclosed this in Parliament on Thursday, October 28, 2021, when they addressed the media on the matter.
The Caucus, she said, has taken the challenge thrown by President Akufo-Addo to Togbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V to go and finish the structure after he made a request to the government to complete the project.
“Going forward, I will be launching a GoFundMe account for donations to finish the E-block as instructed by the President’s infamous retort and I entreat all Aflaovio and well-meaning Ghanaians to donate generously,” the Ketu South MP said.
The Caucus took strong exception to the President response to Togbui Fiti’s request for the E-Block to be completed for students in his area to also benefit from the free SHS.
Hon. Gomashie demanded a retraction and apology and stressed the President’s conduct is a total affront to the entire Volta Region and the Aflao Traditional Area in particular as he never exhibit such conduct against chiefs from other parts of the country.
According to her, revered chiefs and custodians of the proud traditions deserve utmost respect at all times regardless of which part of the country they exercise their authority and what they wear or which region they come from.
“In the supreme interest of this country’s peace and unity and to promote diversity, article 26 of the 1992 constitution states in unambiguous language that “every person is entitled to enjoy, practise, profess, maintain, and promote any culture, language, tradition or religion subject to the provisions of this constitution.”
“In the Cultural Policy of Ghana, the question of culture is succinctly captured in the introduction as “Our culture is the way of life evolved by our people through experience and reflection in the attempt to fashion a harmonious coexistence with our environment.”
This culture, she said, is dynamic and gives order and meaning to the social-political, economic, aesthetic and religious practices of the people stressing, “Our culture also gives us our distinct identity as a people.”
She stressed that as citizens and bonafide taxpayers it was not too much for Torgbui Fiti to advocate for an abandoned school building in his community to be completed.
The Chief, she said, therefore deserves praise for prioritizing education and speaking out against the culture of abandoning inherited projects adding, “He does not deserve such disrespect from the President of the Republic.”
