The planned two-day demonstration by the Concerned Youth of Keta in the Volta Region to protest over the delay in justice for late Jerry Kpesenu has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 3.
According to the youth, the intended demonstration in connection to the deceased, was to ensure justice was served against the police officers who allegedly brutalised the deceased to death whilst in custody at Keta.
Mr Bernard Doe William, Leader of the group in an interaction with the Ghana News Agency, stated that the demonstration was initially scheduled to take place from Wednesday, August 21 to Thursday, August 22, respectively.
“The information we had from the Municipal Security Council MUSEC, indicated that due to the ongoing voter exhibition exercise, the police would not be able to provide the necessary security during the peaceful demonstration since they have deployed their forces to the polling centers.”
Mr Doe further explained that the directive had forced the group to move the event to Tuesday, September 3 in order to give the police and other security agencies maximum time to protect the exercise.
He revealed that leaders of the group have also intended to visit the Attorney General for guidance and the way forward to seek justice for their late brother.”
He stated that a portion of the autopsy report the family received indicated that the late brother was manhandled, tortured, and brutalised that might have led to his sudden demise.
“Officers from the Volta Regional Police Headquarters have visited the family and we hoped to hear some action on the case, but since then, we have not heard anything after.”
Mr Doe urged all stakeholders, youth, and other relevant bodies to remain calm and come out in their numbers on September 3 for a peaceful demonstration in protest the delay in getting justice for the deceased.
It would be recalled that on Thursday, June 6, the late Jerry Kpesenu, popularly known as ‘Maya’ was arrested and allegedly brutalised by the Keta police after a complaint was lodged against him of ceasing some working tools belonging to an electrician who visited his home to fix an air conditioning system in one of the tenant’s room.
The GNA also observed that the tenant could not inform the deceased of his new installation where the melee started.
Earlier, the youth and other stakeholders, including Mr Dzudzorli Gakpe, the Member of Parliament for the area, have since petitioned the IGP about the incident.
