Minority Leader Osahen Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has called on members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain hopeful in the face of their 2024 electoral defeat, emphasizing the party’s determination to reorganize, revitalize, and reclaim political power.
Speaking on Friday, April 4, 2025, during a courtesy visit by gospel musicians Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong (Great Ampong) and Nicholas Omani Acheampong, Afenyo-Markin reassured the NPP base that the party’s journey was far from over.
The musicians, both known for their public support of the NPP, were there to commend his leadership and encourage him and his colleagues in Parliament to continue their work.
In a moment rich with spiritual reflection, the musicians drew parallels between the NPP’s current situation and the biblical account in 1 Samuel 4:1-11 – where Israel was defeated and the Ark of the Covenant was captured by the Philistines.
Despite the setback, they reminded the gathering that God never abandoned His people. Inspired by this message, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that divine support remains with the NPP.
“Though we may have faced a setback, just as Israel did, we are not forsaken. There’s still hope at the end of the tunnel. God is with us; with unity and prayer, we will rise again,” he said.
Reflecting on his own memories during previous times in opposition, he recounted nightly visits to then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo’s home, where prayer warriors led by Cynthia Morrison would be interceding for the party’s future.
“It was the same during President Kufuor’s time in opposition. We’ve always known where to turn in difficult times — to God,” he remarked.
While acknowledging the pain of the 2024 loss, especially in light of the NPP’s accomplishments in government — including numerous social intervention programs and infrastructure projects — Afenyo-Markin admitted the party made mistakes that led some supporters to abstain or vote against them.
“History shows that the NPP, when in power, rolls out impactful policies. For instance, we didn’t just talk about building landing beaches — we delivered on them. Under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, we constructed 12 landing sites in places like Edina, Dixcove, Moree, and Keta. The NDC, on the other hand, is full of empty promises,” he stated.
Despite being in the minority in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin believes the NPP continues to demonstrate a vibrant and effective presence, stressing its readiness to return to power in 2028.
He emphasized that the party’s revival would center on two critical pillars: reconciliation and youth engagement.
“I’ve just returned from a party retreat, and I can confidently say that our reorganization plan is solid. If we unite, bring the youth onboard, and rebrand ourselves with a new posture and attitude, we will become an even stronger force,” he asserted.
He commended the two musicians for their encouragement, noting that their visit was a symbolic sign of a renewed NPP spirit.
“What you have done today sends a powerful message—that we are ready to rise again. And with prayer as our foundation, God will grant us the victory we seek in 2028,” he added.
