The Chief Executive of Empire Cement Limited has pledged to donate Ten thousand Cedis GH₵10,000 every month to develop communities in its operational areas.

The funds is to be accessed by communities in the event of any eventuality.

Nana Obokumatta, made the disclosure during the donation of bags of rice boxes of cooking oil and dresses for distribution to victims following the spillage of the Weija Dam.

“I want to put a seed money of GH ₵10,000 each month into the account for the community so that this money will grow. It should be managed by the community or the Assembly or the Member of Parliament so that should anything happen in the community, that money will be used to cater for the community” Empire Cement Limited CEO stated.

Mr. Obokumatta said if there were such a fund, the community would have turned to it during the spillage of the Dam.

He assured that emissions from the industry when operational will be environmentally friendly to the community.

The items worth hundreds of Cedis were handed over to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly for the benefit of the victims.

Handing over the items, Mr. Obokumatta said the donation was the company’s little contribution to assuage the pains of the affected residents in the communities.

Receiving the items, the Municipal Chief Executive for Weija Gbawe Municipality, Patrick Kumor said the items are the very ones the victims need in order to get on their feet.

While expressing gratitude for the donation stated that the donation will support what the government has already pumped into the Municipality.

Mr. Kumor urged other companies to emulatie the good example of Empire Cement and come to their aid.

He stated that when the factory is operational, a lot of the youth in the Municipality will be employed which will reduce the issues of unemployment in the Municipality and the country at large.

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency, Tina Mensah thanked the company and expressed the hope that the government will soon come to the aid of the residents in the Municipality.

Many homes in and around Weija got flooded over the past week, leading to the destruction of properties, after the Ghana Water Company Limited opened four gates of the Weija Dam to allow the flow of excess water in order to save the dam from collapse.

That followed days of rains in the Eastern Region, the source of water for the dam.

The situation resulted in people abandoning their homes due to the flooding of their areas.

Schools, shops and churches had to shut down due to the flooding, which affected New Weija, Oblogo, Tetegu, White Cross, Tatop, parts of American Farm and Top Town at Ngleshie Amanfro.
