President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that the challenges that confront Ghana and the difficulties the state was plunged into by the COVID-19 pandemic offer the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) an opportunity to grow stronger.
According to him, strengthening the party’s structures will be the platform on which the new NPP Presidential candidate will ride on to win the 2024 general elections on 7th December
“Our responsibility is to do whatever is necessary to make sure that victory is forthcoming. We have to continue our way forward in Ghana because we cannot accept the backsliding that takes place every now and then,” he said.
Speaking at the 29th Anniversary celebration of the party at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 5, 2021, President Akufo-Addo averred that the nation has not benefited from such occasional retrogression and will never benefit.
He said, “The foundation that we are laying today for the prosperity of our nation is going to be shaken if again through our own fault we allow the path to progress to be diverted.”
“Yes, the nation is facing challenges and difficulties but these challenges and difficulties can and will be overcome. They can and will be overcome because we have the policies and the programmes.”
“And we have the values that will enable us to continue our journey of development in freedom,” he added.
President Akufo-Addo expressed delight that he is celebrating the day as the head of state and indicated his entire life has been dedicated to the struggle of the NPP.
The party, he said, has dedicated itself to advancing the ideals and values that were established on August 4th 1947 when the NPP candle was lit at Saltpong by the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
He urged those who subscribe to the values of the NPP’s development in freedom, home and abroad, to hold their chest high and continue to be of service to the motherland.
General Secretary of the party, John Boadu, in his address stated that the NPP deserves to celebrate its contribution to the 29 years of democratic growth in the country.
He averred that though the ruling party has a centre-right political ideology, it has implemented more social intervention programmes than any other political party in the history of the country because it cares for the masses and the poor.
He said, “Former President Kufuor established the National Health Insurance and provided free maternal healthcare. He introduced the livelihood empowerment against poverty for indigent families, provided capitation grant and the school feeding programme.”
“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has also continued with innovative social interventions, and one of his greatest legacies is the free senior high school education. This is set to provide a literate society, which will ensure skills and technical innovation to feed the individualization drive of the state.“
The NPP administration, he said, has delivered on its promises to the Ghanaian people including the One constituency one ambulance programme; A drone service for delivery of medical supplies and restored training allowances for teachers and nurses among others.
Mr. John Boadu stated that the NPP continues to extend a hand of hope to the party’s footsoldiers and the youth and assure they will always remain the heart and soul of the party.
He stressed that the longer the NPP continues to be in power, the better the development of the state and its benefits to the Ghanaian public.
He said, “The longer the NPP manages Ghana, the more opportunities for new jobs and higher incomes. The longer the NPP manages Ghana, the more social intervention like free education and improved healthcare.”
“The longer the NPP manages Ghana, the more the private sector will expand with jobs for the youth,“ he added.
