The High Court in Accra will hear a motion on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., filed by lawyers representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
The motion seeks to challenge the GH¢50 million bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his arrest earlier this week for undisclosed reasons.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail requiring two justified sureties, but as of Friday, May 30, 2025, only one surety had been secured, resulting in his continued detention. His legal team from Marfo & Associates submitted the motion on Friday, arguing that the bail conditions are overly harsh and appear designed to hinder his release.
The detention has triggered significant unrest among NPP supporters, who gathered in large numbers outside the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Friday after reports that Chairman Wontumi had been moved there. NPP leaders, including former Vice President and party flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, visited the NIB to see him but were denied access, with officials citing the crowd as the reason.
Dr. Bawumia voiced frustration over the failed visit, noting that arrangements had been made in advance. Mr. Afenyo-Markin called the bail conditions an abuse of authority, suggesting they were intended to penalize rather than ensure justice.
The court’s decision on June 3 will determine whether the bail terms are adjusted, potentially allowing Chairman Wontumi’s release.
In a related development, Mr. Andrew Appiah-Kubi, counsel for Wontumi disclosed that they met the GH¢50 million bail conditions as of Friday evening but could not secure his release because of the motion filed at the High Court.
